Our Activity Stations, Curriculum & Learning at Her Own Pace
Welcome to our Little Learning Cottage! 🏡📚
One of the questions I've been getting lately is what our homeschool days actually look like, what curriculum we're using, and how I keep learning fun and engaging for a four-year-old.
So consider this a mini little homeschool tour! (more to come)
Thanks to my sister-in-law who is a former Early Childhood educator, I am now a firm believer that learning at this age should feel like an invitation, not an obligation.
Aria is four, and although she isn't quite old enough for kindergarten under Florida's age requirements, she's been assessed and is already approaching kindergarten readiness in several areas.
But here's the thing: just because she's capable of learning something doesn't mean I need to rush her through childhood.
My goal isn't to push her ahead. It's to meet her where she is and gently expand on what she already knows.
And goodness, the amount she's learned in just these last few weeks has been incredible to witness!
Our Activity Station Rotation ✏️
This is one of my favorite parts of our homeschool setup is our rotating activity stations. Instead of having Aria sit through hours of worksheets, I've created little stations throughout our learning space that allow us to practice different skills in fun, hands-on ways.
Some of our favorites include:
- Letters & Phonics: Letter recognition, beginning sounds, vowels, and early word-building activities.
- Writing & Fine Motor Skills: Tracing, name practice, cutting, and activities that strengthen those little hands.
- Math & Numbers: Counting, number recognition, patterns, sorting, and simple math concepts.
- STEM & Sensory Play: Building, experimenting, problem-solving, and exploring through play.
- Bible & Character Building: Scripture, Bible stories, and conversations about kindness, obedience, and loving others.
- Seasonal & Nature Studies: Learning about the world around us through seasonal activities, crafts, and little discoveries.
We rotate these stations throughout the week, switching out activities depending on what we're learning, what she's enjoying, and what skills could use a little extra practice. Some stations are independent, while others are things we work through together.
And no, we don't complete every station every day (although we have a few times already!)
The stations serve our homeschool.
Our homeschool doesn't revolve around completing the stations. 🤎
The Curriculum We're Loving 📖
Our main workbook right now is The Good and the Beautiful Kindergarten Prep.
I've really enjoyed incorporating it into our routine because it gives us structure without making our entire day feel like schoolwork. We work on early reading skills, phonics, handwriting, and building a foundation for kindergarten. Alongside that, I incorporate Spanish, Bible lessons, seasonal unit studies, and plenty of hands-on activities I've created myself.
I love having a curriculum to guide us, but I also love having the freedom to follow her curiosity. If something sparks her interest, we explore it! If she's having an off day, we adjust.
And if a concept needs more time, we give it more time.
Progress Without Pressure 🌱
One of the sweetest surprises of this season has been watching just how much Aria has grown academically in such a short amount of time. Over these past few weeks, I've watched her become more confident with letter sounds, begin exploring how vowels work together to form words, strengthen her writing skills, and develop a deeper understanding of numbers.
But beyond academics, I've noticed something else.
She's genuinely excited to learn.
And to me, that's one of the greatest accomplishments.
I never want learning to become something she dreads simply because I was too focused on getting her to the next level. Like my SIL Melissa said "Childhood isn't a race, and kindergarten readiness isn't a competition." If she's ready for more, we explore more. If she needs to slow down, we slow down.
There's so much beauty in allowing children to develop at their own pace while still providing opportunities to grow.
A Little Tour of Our Learning Space 🏡
Our Little Learning Cottage is nothing extravagant, but it has quickly become one of my favorite corners of our home. We've filled it with books, activity drawers, learning materials, hands-on manipulatives, and little touches that make the space feel warm and inviting. Everything has a purpose, but everything is also allowed to change.
As Aria grows, our space will grow with her.
And that's probably my favorite thing about homeschooling so far.
We get to build an education around the child God entrusted to us, rather than expecting her to fit into one particular mold.
We're still very new to this journey, and I'm learning right alongside her. But if these first few weeks have taught me anything, it's that you don't need to have everything figured out to begin. Sometimes all you need is a willing heart, a little creativity, a whole lot of grace, and the courage to follow where God is leading your family.
Welcome to our Little Learning Cottage.
We're so happy you're here.
With love, Coco
